Women and beer – do they match? How often do you see women drink beer with other women or among other men?

Most probably, you have seen a woman drink beer at home, in the evening, when other men cannot see her. Most probably, you do it yourself when you are sure that other men cannot learn about your “hobby”. However, you cannot argue that most beer advertisements involve men, not women. Therefore, we have an established belief that drinking beer is manlike and does not fit the tender women’s nature.

In reality, there is nothing anti-womanlike in having a pint of beer, especially in countries where beer is a national drink. How come that a woman who was born and lives, for example, in Britain or Germany, is not allowed tasting this wonderful drink? We are used to believe that a man who takes a woman out for a date will willingly take a pint of beer for himself and a glass of white wine for his woman, but why not two pints of beer for both? This is the question which few people can reasonably answer. The stereotype that women do not and cannot drink beer continues to persist. Yet, there seems to be nothing bad or sinful in a woman taking a pint of beer in a bar, surrounded by male friends. We don’t talk about alcoholism here. We do not encourage women to drink. We do not say that beer must become part of women’s lives. What we try to say is that it is high time to get rid of the outdated beliefs and stereotypes. Culture, not alcoholism risks or the fear of negative health consequences, is what is stopping women from drinking beer. A woman who comes to a pub will hardly see many other women there. This is just another cultural barrier to equality and fairness among genders. However, women do deserve their share of beer delight. Eventually, we cannot limit the role of women to mere observers or service workers on large beer festivals!

What seems important is that men, not women, should make the first step and finally realize that women have similar needs and can enjoy the same things with men. That does not mean that women will lose their unique feminine nature. Rather, they will help to deny the existing anachronistic stereotypes that impede their development in a gendered society.

Look around and see how women are enjoying their lives. The number of women present during beer festivals continues to increase. If you take some time and stand next to a great mall, you will see how many women are leaving it with six-packs in their hands. Certainly, everything has its limits. Women should not turn into men. We are different. We are unique. We should not spend our days drinking beer and eating fatty snacks. However, there is nothing bad trying new beer tastes from time to time. Women do have the right for their pint of beer! Women do have the right to enjoy themselves!
