In one of our earlier posts, we talked about women who had been particularly successful in the mass media field. The goal of our post was to show that women could be successful in the mass media field.

woman in mediaWe also hoped that our overview of the most successful mass media women would change the way women are depicted in newspapers, on TV and in Internet publications. We do see how many women go to dangerous places, trying to become professional journalists. They are, probably, more objective and sensitive to unfairness than men. However, it’s a pity that women still lack quality representation in the media. We have studied a number of professional researches and their results, to understand that we are still too far from the ideal representation of women in the media.

First, let’s turn our heads and eyes to the ways in which women are shown in advertising. How do we look? We either look like models and stars advertising cosmetics and the works of art, or we fulfill the role of housewives in the colorful ads about household things. The media, including printed media, do not seem optimistic about showing working women in their ads. There is a feeling that it is either unfashionable or even anti-social. Women? Working? No way! This is, probably, the way chief editors think about every new advertisement they need to create and publish. However, everything changes, and we ladies have already become important and equal members of the working world. Yes, we work! And we work successfully and professionally! The mere fact that so many women have become mass media giants tells a lot about our abilities and achievements.

Second, let’s see what is going on in advertising. Every time an advertised woman is not a housewife, she is a sex object. Researchers are unanimous about it, and this is not a new thing in the media! We have read in some journal article published in 1979 that popular advertisements depicted women as sexually attractive creatures. Women’s sexual appeal is used as a convenient way to attract consumers, and this is why so many women advertise different products and services for men and women. This is why we, women, feel that the way we are depicted in advertising and media is not correct. Our image of femininity is too narrow to be real. We are much more complex than anyone can think. We are much more sophisticated than any, even the best advertisement, can ever show.

Certainly, there are so many women in movies who show that a woman can be a respected professional. Women-detectives, women-cops, women-fighters, and women-investigators suggest that not everything is bad in this world. However, these women also continue playing a secondary role. Don’t think that we are feminist here. No, we are just women who want more objectivity. We want truth. Every day, most of us fulfill more than one role, for example, we can be housewives and bosses. It’s a pity that everyone sees our as housewives and forgets about us, bosses. The world of advertising should change, to give women more voice and professionalism.
