Ladies CEO
At the end of 2011, the leader in computer business, IBM, became a company that also broke the existing gender stereotypes. Simply stated, a woman named Virginia Rometty became the company’s CEO.
We are used to think that women cannot be in business. They are weak and vulnerable to everyday difficulties. However, simply because we want romance and feel vulnerable does not mean that we cannot be business owners. We, women who work in business, are true ladies who have femininity, enjoy shopping and fashion, love our husbands and children, but also do our jobs professionally. We have a difficult task to balance everything in our lives. We need to fulfill many functions. We have to be perfect wives and ideal mothers, but we must also be demanding managers and professional decision makers. Because we can do it we become CEOs, and we hope that women-managers will become more common in the business world.
Probably, not every lady knows what the glass ceiling is. However, many of us feel its pressure in our daily activities. For example, you cannot just come and say, ‘I want to be a CEO, because I have experience, knowledge, and preparedness to work.’ Most probably, company owners will look at you like crazy. At the same time, if you were a man, you would look decisive and effective and, most probably, you would get the job. This is actually how the glass ceiling works: you cannot do many things (or, at least, they believe you cannot do many things) simply because you are a woman.
Even despite these problems, more ladies are becoming business-like. The number of women CEOs constantly grows. The IBM is just one of the many examples of how women conquer the business and market landscapes! Women CEOs work at Avon, PepsiCo, manage Ann Taylor Stores and Reynolds American. They show that women can be successful in business. They prove that making a good career is difficult but possible. They give motivation. They show that ladies’ minds are not limited to fashion and clothes. They show to the whole world that women are personalities, and personalities are ladies. They look and behave like ladies even in the most difficult situations.
Unfortunately, even then, women earn much less than their CEO colleagues. Their earnings are some 60-70% lower than of male CEOs. Moreover, sometimes, it is difficult to define whether a woman CEO is appointed to improve company’s performance or she is simply a semi-fictional figure making up a better company’s image. Of course, companies managed by women look better in the eyes of customers. Clients think that these companies are open and honest in their relations with employees. They also think that these companies do not stop their women-employees from making good career. In reality, no one knows what women CEOs have to experience or go through, before they reach their goals. You should remember that professionalism does not make women less feminine. The most professional and talented women are still women in their best sense. We should be proud to know that some ladies are decisive enough to go beyond society’s expectations, and this is how they actually improve our lives!
