Going on your first date can be fun, but it also builds a bit of anxiety. When you are going to be out with someone that you really like, it is important that you are able to give a great impression of yourself.

In fact, one of the most important parts of going out on a date is holding a good conversation. If you are too aggressive or too shy in your talking you could lose their interest for good. If you’re going to show them a good time, you have to prove what good company you can be. Knowing what to talk about and how deep to go in a conversation could make the difference between keeping their attention and losing them to the surrounding entertainment.

Family History
While rule number one in first dates is to never dig to deep in her past, there is nothing wrong with asking about family history. This lets the person know that you are into knowing them on a more personal level and finding ways that you can be related. Consider asking how many siblings they have or how large their family is. Stay away from questions about parents or grandparents unless she speaks on them. They could be dead or divorced which could stir up old feelings from the past. Sticking to family size and siblings is a great way to get the ball rolling.

Travel
Travel is always something that people enjoy. Whether it’s getting on a plane and going to a tropical paradise, or hoping on a train to site see in a local area traveling is usually a common interest for everyone. You can ask questions about where he/she has been in their past and/or where they plan on going in the future. Getting an inside scoop to their likes and dislikes is always great. Sometimes talking about travel can lead to a very interesting conversation that may carry the date for a while. Everyone likes to hear about new things and comparing frequent flyer miles is a great starting point.

Hobbies
If you’re really into your date talking about their hobbies is a great way to get past those awkward stages. While you don’t want to treat it like an interrogation session, dating is the process of getting to know the person you are with to determine if there is enough chemistry to one day become a couple. Therefore if you don’t ask questions about their likes, dislikes, and extra curricular activities you could end up dating someone that you’re not really compatible with. Also asking about their hobbies helps you for planning dates or get together in the future.

Pet Peeves
Another great ice breaker for your first date is to ask about pet peeves. This question can be a bit tricky and therefore you should never use it as the first conversation you have. However if you are enjoying their company and want to see if there is more in store for you guys you should consider asking this question. By knowing what their “deal breakers” or pet peeves are you can determine if you are a match or if you’d be better off just friends.

Compliments
Compliments are always a bonus especially to a woman. If you like something she is wearing or a perfume she has on, consider telling her so. However, you must be careful not to appear sexual in making your comment. Only compliment her on generic features and avoid complimenting things such as her body as a whole, or anything below her neckline. Women love to know that men pay attention so this could also get you a second date.

Second Date Plans
If at the end of your date you are finding yourself lost for words, you can always fill it in with talks for the future. Don’t appear over confident in your approach, because it can be viewed as cocky. Just express what you liked about spending time with him/her and then ask about what they might like to do the second time around. They might know of places that are great to go and you will feel better knowing that the date is going well.

Everyone gets tongue tied and runs out of things to talk about on the first date. Keep your conversations fresh by asking about things that will interest your date and allow you to get to know them on a better level.
